BASEL
Basel combines international flair with small-town charme and special esprit. It’s a highly cosmopolitan city, not just as the center of anagglomeration of 700’000 people living in three countries (Switzerland, Germany, France), but also as home to citizens of some 150 nations.
As a large number of important and internationally-active companies have their headquarters in Basel, the city attracts highly-skilled specialists and their families from the widest possible variety of countries. These spread Basel’s name throughout the world - and simultaneously ensure that the city regularly hosts gatherings of people from all corners of the globe. Basel is also the seat of the Bank for International Settlements, BIS.
In the course of the European football championship UEFA EURO 2008, the third-largest sporting event in the world, Basel will be the main venue in Switzerland. The opening game as well as five other games, including one of the two semi-finals, will be held at the St. Jakob-Park
And even so, the people of Basel are mad about culture, they love architecture and art, and there is hardly any other region in Switzerland where the gastronomic arts are so highly cultivated. And don’t forget that the region where the three countries meet (Switzerland, Germany and France) has been for many years now the fastest-growing economic region in Switzerland.
